I absolutely love the class!  Francisco is a wonderful instructor- he provides instruction in a manner and context that makes sense to someone like me, one who has no dance training and finds learning steps a struggle.  Thanks for what has been an absolutely fabulous experience so far!  I look forward to the rest of the classes and will certainly continue with other classes in the future.

From our students:

Thank you Francisco and Stacey! From the staff behind the counter, the instructors who teach, to the other students who are there to learn, you have succeeded in creating a wonderful environment with an amazing group of people. There is something very special happening with The Dance Family, and I am happy to be apart of it.

While I have taken salsa lessons at several other places, something was always missing. From the moment I first walked into The Dance Family studio, it felt like home. Everyone on your staff is professional, supportive and excited to be there. Like with any championship team, chemistry and attitude is everything, and you have lots of both.

Taking lessons at the Dance Family studio has been challenging, yet very enjoyable and I now have a new found passion for learning to dance salsa. I wanted thank you and your amazing staff for truly making a difference in my life, on and off the dance floor!

Have a great day,
Eric Rhinehart

Hi,

I stopped in yesterday to purchase your 10-disk DVD set. The DVDs are excellent--high quality with good step-by-step detail.  My friend and I would like to sign up for Salsa 1 classes.

Thanks!

~Carmen Rosales,

Hi Stacey,

Thank you for the email!  I'm really glad that I found your and Francisco's dance studio. I immediately felt very comfortable in your "family". I'm so excited to be back doing salsa again, and I really like the way the two of you teach. You make everything clear, you give feedback (which is not the case with all instructors), and you give an appropriate amount of time to practice each turn and pattern. I'm passionate about the dance and I hope to
make good progress (I did get the gold pass... :) ), I just hope my job and my other responsibilities will not inflict too much on the dance practice. Anyway, I plan to show up tomorrow night (Friday).

Thank you again! Send my regards to Francisco.

Sincerely,
Niklas

Francisco & Stacey,

Thanks for the pictures from the Summer Dance Camp.  I still can't believe that Yvonne and I took 4th in the Int/Adv Jack & Jill Contest at the Salsa Extravaganza Dance Camp.  Cool.  I couldn't have accomplished this without you.  Thanks so much!!!

~Charmeen Wing,

Hi Francisco and Stacey!  I just wanted to let you both know how happy I am with my FSDP experience to date.  To be honest, when I initially signed up for Salsa 1 and Latin Club Dance classes at PCC, I thought it would just be a fun way to spend some time on Saturday afternoons.  I never really thought about continuing on after those sessions ended.  When it came time to choose whether to continue on to Salsa 2, I decided to go with it, but I still didn't think much beyond that.

But I have to tell you, I'm glad I switched over to your classes at the Dance House, because I now know that I want to continue on all the way to level 5 (assuming I'm invited to, of course)!  Rather than just taking the one lesson on Saturdays, armed with my Golden Ticket, I now take as many classes on both Tuesdays and Fridays as my feet and the rest of my body will let me; this includes taking Level 1 classes again.  Francisco had suggested doing that at the end of the PCC series, but I didn't seriously see the need.  Now, as I'm taking Level 2 and having the opportunity to dance with - and get tips from - really accomplished dancers on staff like Sergio, Salud and Fernando (who are all also amazing people, as if you didn't know that already), I see that repeating Level 1 is a fabulous opportunity to practice the finer points of style and technique.  Besides, it's just plain fun to keep on dancing!

What's really great too is how much I'm beginning to feel like part of a family.  I'm getting to know some of the regulars at the Dance House, and they're all so nice!  Even though I miss the people I saw every week at PCC, I still get to see some of them once in a while at the Friday night practice dances.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement with you (Stacey noted tonight that I have a tendency to be a bit chatty in class, and she's right; but I hope you take it as a compliment, because that is just enthusiasm bubbling over).  Thanks for bringing out the dancer in me!

Dear Francisco and Stacey,

Greetings and happy birthday again to Stacey.

I just want to share how happy I am with your classes! Last night, being a dancer somewhere between beginner and (slightly) advanced beginner, a light bulb went on in my head as I recalled Stacey's advice to the Level 2 class last Tuesday: try to work the basic out of your routine if you can at this point. This is one (of many, I'm sure) factors that helped me understand why what I'm doing at this point does not look like what I see when watching the established folks dance.

"…that helped me understand why what I'm doing at this point does not look like what I see when watching the established folks dance."

Moving on, I spoke with Francisco a week before joining your classes and mentioned my concern that I feared becoming too formal and ballroom-like in my Salsa dancing. He stated (which Stacey has repeated in our classes) that we must never forget that, while we must provide nice, strong leads (and have a lot to learn from ballroom forms), we can't forget the street roots of Salsa. I'm glad to say this has been quite evident in your classes.

"...I feared becoming too formal and ballroom-like in my Salsa dancing."

Anyway, I will likely not continue with (another studio) when my current session with them ends, and I look forward to trying your spins/turns and styling classes in the future (as well as the next round of Level 2).
See you Tuesday,
Noel ~ Tuesday night Pasadena Classes

Hello Francisco and Stacey:

I enjoy your Salsa classes very much. I like the dance partner rotation because it helps me in following the man's lead and not trying to guess what their next moves will be. Plus I get to dance with different people and this way I enjoy dancing even more. When I dance with my husband, I tend to be critical of him and focus on what he does wrong (believe me this was not done intentionally but rather subconsciously). Rotation provides my husband and I a chance to practice with other students with different levels of skill. It also builds up our confidence so we would not be too "shy" when dancing with people we don't know. Thanks.

Sue Dong, Pasadena Tuesday night student
Additional comment from David (husband of Sue)
I agree with Sue, especially the part she picks on me. I enjoy practicing dancing with different people, although at first it was kind of awkward and intimidating. With rotation, I think my wife finally realizes how good a dancer I am (just kidding). Thanks

Hi Guys, it's Laura...
I wanted to let you know that I met a really nice couple while I was at work on Sunday.  They mentioned that they have wanted to learn how to Salsa dance, so I gave them your information...I believe that they will be trying to come to a class very soon.   I told them that you two are the nicest, friendliest teachers that I have encountered in the Salsa world...
I also wanted to tell you that Catalina was great and I am truly looking forward to your next event.  I would like to know if you need any help with any of the things that you are planning in the future... and if I can try to put a good word out for you two through Sabor Magazine.  School is out the second week of May and then my life will be a lot less hectic...so if you two need anything, let me know.     Alright, I just wanted to keep in touch and let you know that I have been wishing that I could make it to your classes...!!!  Thank you again for being such a wonderful, down-to-earth couple!  If you need anything in the future...please feel free to ask me.
All my best,
Laura Clark ~ Writer, SABOR Magazine

Hi Francisco! Hi Stacey! (and hi to baby too!))
Just want to say how much I'm enjoying your salsa classes. It's so great to have you two as instructors. Your energy & charisma is inspiring and what makes our class exciting! You can bet I'm signing up for Salsa II AND Cardio Salsa! See you next week!
Fondly,
Lisa Harris, PCC Classes first quarter

Francisco and Stacey
Last night was fun and holy cow it was a big class!  You two are so nice and are good instructors.  I have taken classes in the past with instructors who are grumpy and one who was so arrogant poo poo. You're always so positive.  I like getting "you did good tonight"  I take it in like a second grader.  I have been mom for so long and dancing is my first venture out "on my own."  This January is my one year anniversary of dancing.  The first class I took I thought I was going to throw up I was so nervous.  Even the body contact was un nerving.  I have always been a little klutzy and dancing was something I didn't think I would be able to do, let alone like......but I am hooked.  To hear I did good always makes me feel like I got a gold star on my paper heehehee. Please keep me on your email list.
Have a good day,
Tamie Hall, El Segundo Latin Classes

Hi Guys,
We are indeed planning to continue with you two.  Our dancing skills have improved dramatically under your tutelage.  We have already purchased our Catalina tickets and have made hotel reservations. We are very flattered about the capainhood (of our Catalina 2000 dance performance team).  I just hope Ron will be able to master the Spanish!
See you on Tuesday.

Jean Ellison, El Segundo Ballroom and Latin Classes

Stacey,
I'm writing to say, "thanks" for such a great class and your wonderful attitude. This is the first dance class I've ever taken and I feel so blessed to have found you and Francisco. The way you teach is really great and your warmth and accessibility is really special and I want you to know that it's recognized and deeply appreciated.
Thanks again for your support!

Feedback from our PCC Students from Spring Semester (1999):
Was the class worth the money? YES! YES! YES! Comments: It was fabulous! Loved it! Instructors are terrific. Fabulous class! Haven’t had so much fun! These two are tremendous dancers and motivational teachers. Great fun, and teachers don’t just "go through the motions," but enjoyed the time instructing. Fabulous - best dance teachers I’ve had. Can’t get any better than this. Fabulous! Give ‘em both a raise! Great, patient instructors. Very skilled. Excellent work out. Highly recommended this to a girlfriend. EXCELLENT! Motivating! I really enjoyed it; they’re very enthusiastic. Enjoyed the class, good instructors. A lot of fun. Excellent class - loads of fun.  Lots of enjoyment on their part. These guys did an excellent job. The best dance teachers I’ve ever had! Very, very good. Excellent instructors, took the time to show you step by step. It wasn’t all about the instructors, but dedicated to student needs. Great! Nice job! Great class.

Francisco and Stacey,
I really enjoy my Salsa and Swing Classes with you two. You make me feel comfortable in learning these new dances (new to me). You really break the dances down so it is easy to learn the steps.
~Linda Paugh, Salsa Group Classes, Pasadena

Dear Stacey and Francisco:

You asked me a while ago to put down on paper my thoughts concerning your classes. I've finally found the time to do so. Here they are.

The beginning point of my analysis is to acknowledge why students take dance classes. I think that most, if not all, take dance classes primarily so that they can dance outside of dance classes. They also wish to have a good time while learning.

The reasons that people attend your classes (even when they have to come from Chatsworth or West Hills or other far off places) is the unrivaled package of learning that you two offer. First, your foundational approach of lead/follow is an excellent approach. Your tutelage has fully entrenched me in the concept of the man as the leader taking care of the woman.

Second, you are excellent teachers. It is apparent that you have a wealth of knowledge and understanding about what you teach, but that, alone, does not make a good teacher. You also know how to teach others to progress in their own dancing. You have an understanding of how to take students step by step through the learning process. You especially have a gifting in breaking down a dance pattern into its essential basic parts and finding a way to take the class as a whole through each step. This is a technique which may seem an obvious necessity of teaching, but my experience with other teachers shows that it is difficult to implement. You also offer individual attention to developing each class member's ability to perform the dance taught. In contrast, my other classes were generally taught by leading the class members through repetitive pattern drills, with little attention to addressing each individual's needs.

Additionally, you have a unique talent for assessing and explaining the most important points of improvement for each individual. You possess that skill in a measure far greater than other dance instructors. Furthermore, you accomplish this in way which is not perceived by the student as judgmental or threatening. You know your students and what they can and want to handle.

Third, as I've said before, you are good people. I, for one, find it valuable to be around people I respect, and I respect you. I know that others feel the same way.

Fourth, you have an obvious genuine love for what you are doing and desire to see your students improve. Your concern and enthusiasm manifest that teaching is much more than a job to you.

Fifth, you are accomplished dancers. No small part of the pleasure of taking your class is watching you perform the movements which you are teaching. Sixth, you are real and accessible. A testament to that is the fact that you requested that I offer my suggestions for improvement for your classes.

Now, I wish to discuss some of the recent changes you have made to the class. Overall comment: as a whole, they are great!

First, teaching a class cycle through the use of a routine aids in the memory of the patterns we have learned and also challenges us to perfect each move of that routine as we progress through it.

Second, upping the level of instruction has energized the class. The more complicated salsa patterns, new basic salsa steps, jazz movements, and body control lessons have been a blast. This kind of instruction in higher levels of dance patterns and technique have not only energized the class, but also upped the ante on what the class now expects of its development. I, personally, find it both challenging and fun (especially the jazz movements which are totally new to me).

Third, by offering both Salsa 1 and Salsa 2, you have found the perfect balance between addressing the needs of new students and those who are advancing beyond the beginner stage.

Fourth, at least for this new session, you have concentrated on one form of dance (thankfully, salsa). This will allow the desire in your students to be able to dance outside of dance class to be accomplished more quickly. I personally hope that you continue to concentrate on one dance form. I know that offering only short-term instruction in a dance form before changing to another (e.g., tango then east coast swing then west coast swing) was frustrating not only for me, but for some others in class, because it left us short of the goal of being able to dance outside of the class.

Fifth, I find the idea of actually practicing to perform intriguing. It certainly adds to the desire to learn. I'm not sure where you are headed with this idea, but even if we never actually perform, learning an entire performance routine is fun and useful in and of itself. I still remember in my head every move of the dances I was taught for Night of One Thousand Stars. In contrast, the only way I can remember all the patterns I have been taught in the various classes I have been taught over the years is by keeping a list of them on my computer.

Sixth, setting up events where we can go to dance is extremely important. Remember, dancing outside of the classes is the reason why we are taking the classes! The Catalina event and the times at Sportsman Lodge were helpful in aiding us to get together outside of class while meeting members of your other classes and dancers outside of your classes. I thought for a while about changes you could make which would be useful. After all, that was what your main request. Frankly, with all the changes you've recently made, I couldn't think of any. I know this sounds ingenuous, but it is true.

Finally, I've said before, I wish to be of assistance to you in any way I can.

In Christ,
James (1998)
